Dyed black hair, want red highlights?

I have dyed dark black hair. I want to get red tips similar to Jared Leto from 30 Seconds to Mars.

I really don't want to drop $60 at a salon, so I'm considering L'Oreal Color Rays.

From what I've heard, since my hair is dyed and not natural black, I'll need to bleach it. What are the steps to doing this? Is there any other way?

What you'll need to do partly depends on what kind of black dye you've been using if you use a level 3 permanent you may need to bleach out your hair a few times to get it light enough to dye the red over, if you're only using a temporary black (level 1 or 2) it'll be easier to lift. They make a red paste/gel you could try that first to see if its really what your wanting....If you bleach your hair strips they will become drier than the rest of your hair....also can damage and cause split ends.....I'd try a temp paste/gel first just to see if its what ya really want. They sell the paste /gel at local walgreens....cvs......rite aid...for under 10 dollars.
